Tytherington High School - Sixth Form

Tytherington High School LogoTytherington is a successful and oversubscribed 11-18 school and specialist science college. We are an inclusive learning community encouraging excellence, respect and personal fulfilment. Our aim of Achievement for All extends into the sixth form with varied provision of AVCE vocational courses and GCE at AS and A2 level.

Courses

In order to meet the needs of all students at 16+ we are keen to work in collaboration with Macclesfield College and other high schools in the town to provide a comprehensive range of courses. As a specialist science college we offer traditional AS and A2 level courses in the sciences as well as courses in Astronomy and vocational BTEC courses in partnership with Macclesfield Hospital. In addition, we offer a full range of traditional arts and humanities courses as well as new subjects at Key Stage 5 like psychology and sociology, and vocational courses in business and health & social care. Students study these courses to level 2 (AS/Intermediate) or 3 (A2/Advanced) standard over 2, 3 or even 4 years. All sixth form students study a course in information technology in year 12 leading to a BTEC award.

Entrance Policy

Advanced level courses are open to students who have achieved a minimum of 5 GCSE’s at A* to C grades. These must include mathematics and English at grade C or above. In most cases students will be expected to achieve a grade B or above in the subjects to be studied to A2 level. These are the entry requirements for all advanced level 3 courses. Students wishing to follow intermediate or level 2 courses (Business and Health & Social Care) will have enjoyed GCSE success across a range of subjects but not necessarily to the standard of grade C or above. Success on the intermediate course could lead to transfer to advanced level 3 courses.

Student Support

Sixth form students each have a personal tutor to guide them through their time in the sixth form. Rather than daily form time, tutors arrange individual tutorials with students to share any concerns, review academic progress and help to plan individual careers paths. We continue to involve parents in the supportive process both through formal parents’ evenings and by personal contact by tutors. Tutors advise students on the complimentary studies that they need to involve themselves with to ensure a broad and balanced sixth form education.

Facilities

Tytherington is a modern well-resourced school that has enjoyed considerable development over recent years. As a specialist science college, not only do we have ten modern well-resourced laboratories, but we also have a new ‘megalab’ designed specifically for research into sports science. We have excellent sporting facilities including a 1.3 million pound sports centre funded by the Big Lottery. Our up to date technology centre is designed around a large ICT suite. We have a state-of-the-art Learning Resource Centre which boasts a new library, conference room, ICT suites and classrooms. Our sixth form students make considerable use of these facilities for private study. In addition, sixth form students have a recently renovated, dedicated sixth form centre with their own study area and common room.

Sixth Form Opportunities

Year 12 begins with a residential induction course at a popular university where students have the opportunity to explore their new status and responsibility and to consider their approach to a more independent style of sixth form study. Sixth form students are respected as role models within the school. All students are encouraged to play an active part in house events and will organise competitions and activities for younger students. Sixth form students are valued in their role as peer mentors both in the classroom and as key players in the pastoral support system. There are opportunities to contribute fully to school and sixth form life including: Young Enterprise, National Science competitions, public speaking, concerts and productions, house competitions, community events and sports activities.
